Projects : Life Long Learning : LLP Transfer of Innovation

Project
01. Further Development of the curriculum and training materials and adaptation according to the key competences for lifelong learning – European Reference Framework

Type: LLP-ERASMUS
Category: LLP Transfer of Innovation
Parent: EQLEARN- Learning for Equality and Empowerment-Learning for ALL

Period:
December 2009

During the implementation of the project Channels of Access curriculums have been developed to assist unemployed women to enter the labor market. Innovative methodological tools were used and were identified as best practices by the DP (included in the Best Practices Directory of Equal Projects Cyprus).3 curricula were designed:

1.English Language, (ERF-Communication in foreign languages)
2.Basic & Advanced Computer skills (ERF-Digital Competence)
3.Communication & Professionalism (ERF-Social and civic competences)

After the evaluation of the employment (from the employers point of view mainly) some weaknesses were identified that were related to the fact that some of the ERF Competences were not developed.

The objective of this workpackage was to identify the gaps between the current curricula and training materials, and the ERF.
After the identification of these gaps the training modules that have been developed under COA were improved, integrating the definition as well as knowledge, skills and attitudes suggested in the ERF. The training modules that have not been developed were developed.

The following three modules were improved:
1.Communication in foreign languages
2.Digital Competence
3.Social and civic competences

The following 5 modules were developed from the beginning:
1.Communication in the mother tongue
2.Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology
3.Learning to learn
4.Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship
5.Cultural awareness and expression

The same actions were performed for the training materials. It should be noted that training curricula and materials that have been developed during COA were in the Greek language and have been translated in English. The new modules were developed in the English language as well. In addition, although COA focused in the learning of the English language, during the pilot of the improved version, THE SAME MODULE WILL BE USED FOR TEACHING THE FRENCH LANGUAGE

Description Of Activities
The Work package includes the following activities:

1. Review of European Reference Framework and Preparation of a report. The objective of this activity is to develop a common understanding of the ERF by all partners since all the partners will be involved in the improvement and the development of new training modules. Therefore, this activity will be performed by all partners.

2. Identification of the gaps between existing curriculum and ERF and Production of three Check Lists- The ERF defines clearly what each competence means in terms of skills, knowledge and attitudes. The objective of this activity is to check thoroughly the curricula developed (under COA) and to identify that all elements of the definitions of ERF in terms of skills, knowledge and attitudes are included. Another objective of this action is to identify elements of knowledge, skills and attitudes that may be developed under the existing curricula but do not respond to the definition of the specific competence (may respond to the definition of another competence). OBJECTIVE IS TO DEVELOP MODULES THAT ARE SPECIFIC TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SPECIFIC COMPETENCE.

3. Development of the module Communication in the mother tongue (curriculum & training material)

4. Improvement of the module Communication in foreign languages(curriculum and training material)

5. Development of the module Mathematical Competence and basic competences in science & technology(curriculum and training material)

6. Improvement of the module Digital Competence(curriculum & training material)

7. Development of the module Learning to Learn(curriculum and training material)

8. Improvement of the module Social and civic competences(curriculum and training material)

9. Development of the module Sense of Initiative and Entrepreneurship (curriculum and training material)

10. The three modules that have been developed under COA in the Greek language and have been improved will be translated in the English language.

EQLEARN will handle the development of each competence as a different training module.

This workpackage involves the design and improvement of curricula and training materials, therefore the methodological tools are very important. Development of different competences requires different methodological tools. The fact that we are designing or improving training curricula that have been developed for a disadvantaged group and will be used to train disadvantaged groups suggests that special methodological tools must be used that will take into account:
1. Characteristics of the disadvantaged group (including learning pace and style)
2. Different characteristics of each learner.

In fact the objective here is to develop a curriculum where the trainer will be able, based on some parameters, to select from a pool of methodological tools. These methodological tools are a key aspect of EQLEARN since they will actually be used in the ICT environment according parameters provided by the user.
